TRIP DETAILS

Trip Highlights
Day 1:
Arrive at CrossRiver Wilderness Centre by 5:00 p.m. After preliminary introductions, a hot evening meal will be served in the main lodge. After dinner, we will discuss more about the coming multi-sport adventures, and then the evening is yours to relax at the Wilderness Centre.
Day 2:
After an early breakfast, we pack some small day packs and prepare to head out on a full-day hiking out-trip. Once at the trailhead (approximately a 45 minute drive), we will have an on-location safety talk, and begin the journey. The trail takes us through dense forest and scree slopes before arriving at a large subalpine meadow, with a mosaic of colourful wildflowers everywhere. Depending on group circumstances, we may break here for lunch, or else continue a little further to our day hike’s final destination—a picturesque high subalpine lake. At the large lake, we spend some time exploring around the area, whether walking around the lake itself; hiking up to the adjacent ridgeline; or even moving further up above the treeline onto a snowpatch, or scree slope. Plant, wildflower, and many possible wildlife viewing opportunities, alongside possible nature-based activities, could present themselves all around us in this lush eco-system. We will start making our way back down to the trailhead by 3:00 p.m., arriving back at CrossRiver for dinner. The night is again yours to relax at the Wilderness Centre, whether alone with a book, around the campfire, or in the outdoor wood-fired hot tub. Walking distance: 7-8 km, one way; elevation gain: 700 m.
Day 3:
After an early breakfast, we spend today on a full-day river rafting trip on the Kootenay River. Depending on time of year, the waters may range from Class 2 to 3+, with some short sections of low Class 4 rapids in June. The surrounding cliffs, characteristic waterfalls, and good stories along the way make this trip a fun and unique way to enjoy the mountains. We aim to be back at CrossRiver by 5:00 p.m., just in time to wash up before dinner.
Day 4:
Today is your checkout day, but we make the most of it with one final half-day hike first. After reaching the trailhead, we begin a steep, though short, ascent up to a high alpine mountain ridge—well above treeline (if your legs are still recovering from previous days, a gentler half-day hike is also possible instead). We take it slow, but steady, as it is a very unique experience to be able to reach this high on only a half-day hike. We will pass through thinning forest and then large low alpine meadows at treeline, with carpets of wildflowers, before reaching the ridgeline with 360° views of mountain peaks. I have also seen mountain goats; mule deer; a bobcat; and golden eagles up here, but we can’t stay long. We will head back down to the trailhead by 12:00 p.m., and arrive back at CrossRiver for an early-afternoon lunch. After lunch, we part ways until next time. Walking distance: 3-4 km, one way; elevation gain: 600 m.
