Arrive in Yellowknife. Orientation meeting and overnight in Yellowknife at your own expense.
Day 2:
Flight to the river. After setting up camp there will be time to explore the area.
Day 3 to 4:
First day on the river. This is moose country and these animals are often present along the shore. As you approach 'Big Bend' the river narrows. You will pass Hook River and an old portage.
Day 5 to 6:
Back on the river to rocky Defile Rapids. You will stop here for the day to give some time to scout the rapids and do the 1.5 km portage. Excellent arctic char fishing.
Day 7:
Back on the river, you drift past the Kendall River where the Coppermine widens into several shoulder flats and islands. Destination for the night is Stony Creek.
Day 8:
A day to look for copper in the Coppermine Mountains on a hike that will follow the footsteps of the explorer Franklin.
Day 9 to 10:
Now you will start a long section that is sandwiched between the terraced hillsides of the Coppermine Mountains on one side and the barren sloping banks of the September Mountains on the other side. At the Melville River, the Coppermine makes its final turn northward. It is here that the river makes its greatest drop, following 460 feet in 50 miles over 30 sets of rapids. Tundra vegetation becomes dominant. You will drift through Muskox and Sandstone Rapids.
Day 11 to 12:
You will encounter Escape Rapids. The next 16 km to Bloody Falls takes you through both marked and unmarked rapids on a fast down river run to the boulder fan above the falls. A hiking day will be spent around the falls.
Day 13:
Only 16 km of the river remains until reaching the Arctic Ocean. After portaging around the falls you will complete the remaining section of the river. You will reach the town of Coppermine in the afternoon and the rest of the day is yours.
Day 14:
Return flight to Yellowknife (not included in the price).
