TRIP DETAILS

Trip Highlights
Day 1:
We pick you up at your hotel in Whitehorse and drive the famous Alaska Highway to Frances Lake (620km). From here, we take you on a 30-minute boat ride to the lodge. (Or, if you arranged to see the Yukon from the air, our float plane delivers you to the lodge from either Whitehorse or Watson Lake.) At the lodge, your hosts will show you to your own cosy log cabin—your base from which to explore the incredible, remote beauty of this area—before inviting you to the main lodge for a flavourful and hearty dinner. The lodge boasts an awesome view of the Logan Mountains and also features a bright and comfortable living room equipped with a small library.
Day 2 to 3:
Early in the morning, we will prepare for an exciting 30-minute flight by float plane to McPherson Lake, where we will camp for two nights on a sandy beach. Here, you will explore the surroundings of the camp, and practice the paddling strokes you’ll need to master before canoeing the river. From this picturesque campsite, we hope to see moose, caribou, trumpeter swans, and bald eagles.
Day 4 to 5:
After two days of wildlife viewing and paddling practice, we will begin our trip down the seldom-paddled and spectacular Yusezyu River. Although the Yusezyu is not considered a dangerous river, you will use your new paddling skills to navigate around sweepers (fallen, submerged trees), rocks, and shallow spots. On the first night, we will pitch our tents on a gravel bar along the river and try our luck at fishing for grayling. The next day, when we enter the lower and slower section of the river, we stand a good chance of seeing moose, beavers, and waterfowl. The last night of our canoe trip will be spent on a pretty Riviera-style beach at the north end of Frances Lake.
Day 6:
A short two-hour paddle across the most northern part of the lake and down a connecting river will bring us to a prearranged meeting point. From here, the lodge boat will collect us for the one-hour ride back to Frances Lake Wilderness Lodge. Back at the lodge, you'll be shown to your own cabin and the welcome comforts of a hot shower, beachfront sauna, and a soft bed—not to mention a fabulous home-cooked meal served in the main lodge!
Day 7:
Spend the day relaxing at the lodge, angling, paddling in the sheltered bay, strolling the lakeshore, or participating in a guided excursion. In the evening, we will prepare for the next part of our adventure: the hiking excursion. (Because you will carry your own backpack for this portion of the trip, we encourage you to pack only essential items.)
Day 8:
After breakfast, we’ll leave the lodge for a pleasant boat ride to the east arm of Frances Lake. From here we put on our packs—taking advantage of an old creek-side hunting trail—and climb above the tree line of Mt. Hunt. This three-to-four hour hike brings us to the campsite that will be our home for the next four nights.
Day 9 to 10:
Guided day hikes in the northern foothills of the Canadian Rockies will bring us into a rarely seen world of spectacular beauty. You will be treated to vista after vista of mountains, lakes, creeks, and rivers—all teeming with wildlife such as caribou, mountain goats, pikas (small, high altitude-dwelling mammals related to rabbits), and an abundance of birds.
Day 11:
After breakfast we will return to the trailhead at Frances Lake along the same hunting trail that we followed on day 8. The boat will return us to our friendly hosts at the lodge.
Day 12 to 13:
You will spend your remaining two days at Frances Lake indulging in the activities of your choice. You may participate in a guided excursion exploring the area, take a visit to the Yukon’s first Hudson’s Bay Company trading post, or fish, photograph, hike, swim in the lake, or read a book from the library.
Day 14:
Unfortunately you will have to leave this wonderful place. The lodge boat will return you to the boat ramp, where you will be driven back to Whitehorse (620km) on the famous Campbell and Alaska Highways.
