ABOUT THIS REGION  WILDLIFE WATCHING

Caribou watching tour in northern Labrador

Join us at a comfortable & catered wildlife photo camp situated on a remote crater lake on the ‘barrengrounds’ of Northern Labrador - one of the most isolated wilderness regions in mainland North America! Every year one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles occurs in Canada's far north - the migrations of the barrenground caribou herds. This wildlife watching tour offers you a chance to be a part of this amazing caribou migration event. Join us in early autumn at a comfortable un-guided but catered photo camp trip at the remote mainland sub-Arctic region of northern Canada. As our photo camps are often set up nearby active wildlife water crossing for caribou, often times such animals are seen right in the camp yard. Sometimes caribou stay around for days and even weeks at a time - and these characters are affectionately known as 'yardboo'!

Often other wild animals will grace us with their presence on the autumn Caribou' trips, including black bear, moose, wolves, wolverine, porcupine, Arctic hare, Arctic & red fox. When the sky is clear and the night is cool you are in for another treat, the dancing lights of the aurorea borealis. Swirling colours of green, red and pink often cover the sky from horizon to horizon. World-class catch & release fishing for lake trout and Arctic char is available on the seldomfished waters just out the door from the wildlife camp. Motorized boats are available at the camp for access to fishing and when weather permits, to provide access to surrounding wildlife and scenic areas. This trip is perfect for anyone looking to rediscover true wilderness.

Accommodations: In 2012, these trips are being operated from a remote lodge located in northern Labrador, set in a depression created 36 million years ago by a meteor impacting the high barren plateau just south of the Torngat Mountains. The camp is situated by a beautiful sand beach at the eastern end of a lake, and is surrounded by incredible rolling tundra & semi-mountainous terrain. This is a relatively new lodge, parts of which are still under construction; and is destined to be environmentally friendly & state-of-the-art upon its completion. This unique camp offers electricity by portable generator, and eventually enhanced by solar panels. Also featured is our northern library with local area lore, plus an emergency communications center with satellite telephone and battery charging station. Sleeping accommodations are in rudimentary open-frame private cabins complete with beds, wood stoves & rugs, and set up to accommodate 2-3 people in each. At this remote camp we will also offer a portable shower facility. Toilets are outdoor latrines (outhouses). Often a float-equipped aircraft is based part-time at the wildlife camp. The airplane is used for wildlife air reconnaissance (as needed), and is available for emergency use should a problem ever arise. Even from this remote location we are situated less than an hour from medical facilities. Communications with the ‘outside world’ is maintained by satellite telephone.
Meal Information: All meals are prepared and served fresh daily. The kitchen turns out quality ‘northern style’ and gourmet meals.
Guide Information: Co-led by naturalists and photographer trip leaders, our unique interpretive wildlife trips are designed to offer high quality wildlife viewing and present in-depth knowledge of the fascinating area’s history.
Weather Information: Fall temperatures average between 0-10 degrees Celsius. Be aware of the possibility of inclement weather such as cold temperatures and high winds.
Comments: This trip is suitable for all ages in moderate physical condition. Expect to hike 3-8 km per day over easy terrain, carrying a day pack. Some basic hiking experience would be an asset.
