ABOUT THIS REGION  WILDLIFE WATCHING

Arctic birding tour on Herschel Island

This trip-of-a-lifetime birding tour takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery of the Western Arctic. Starting in the scenic and historic community of Dawson City, Yukon, you travel northward on the famous Dempster Highway: through Tombstone Territorial Park, crossing the Arctic Circle, passing over the lonely and haunting Richardson Mountains, and finally descending into the Mackenzie River Delta in the Northwest Territories. From Inuvik the group will charter an aircraft and fly to the remote Hershcel Island Territorial Park, located 5 km off the northern coast of the Yukon surrounded by the waters of the Beaufort Sea. Here on Herschel Island you will camp in this isolated Arctic landscape and view the many breeding species that come to the Arctic to take advantage of the explosion of life that occurs in the short, but dramatic, summer of endless light: a truly epic birding voyage !!

Arctic birding tour on Herschel Island

Modern-day access to northern Yukon was made possible by the construction of the Dempster Highway, which was begun in 1959 but not fully completed until 1979. The highway is named after Inspector William Dempster of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, who headed the search for the infamous Lost Patrol. The Dempster Highway is Canada’s northernmost highway, stretching 671 km (417 miles) to the town of Inuvik, Northwest Territories. It is an engineering triumph. Designers had to pioneer new techniques for building on permafrost, such as laying down a gravel pad 1.5- -2.5m (4-8 feet ) in thickness to insulate the permafrost below from the heat of the short, but sometimes intense, summer. Without this thick layer of insulating gravel the highway would literally sink into the ground. The highway is famous for its stunning fall colours, unsurpassed wilderness, and amazing opportunities to view wildlife.
