ABOUT THIS REGION  DOGSLEDDING

Dogsledding ranch adventures for beginners

Discover the fun and excitement of dogsledding at this 'Rookie Ranch' in the Yukon. Specifically designed for beginners, this ranch is modelled on the well-known western concept of a "Dude Ranch" for novice horse riders. Even if you have never set foot on a dog-sled before you will be driving your own team before you leave. On this tour guests experience all aspects of the amazing winter sport of dog sledding, including learning how to care for sled dog, harnessing and "booting" dogs, handling a dog sled & motivating a dog sled team. All the dogs are Alaskan Huskies and all of them are racing stock for long-distance competitive racing. Most of the dogs have been bred and born at the kennels. Some of the dogs are Yukon Quest veterans, others are race hopefuls in their 1st or 2nd year of training.

Dogsledding ranch adventures for beginners

Rookies begin by going out in a sled with a guide but can soon drive a dog team on their own. By the 3rd or 4th day many are ready to try an overnight camping trip, if desired. At the end of the day Rookies can return to the ranch and help with evening feeding and share trail stories over a fine dinner. For the more adventurous, out on the trail there are Snowtrekker tents complete with a small stove or you can rough it and try "cold camping" on your sled just like Yukon Quest mushers!

They are very comfortable and clean with furnishing, linen, limited cooking facilities and propane heaters. There is no electricity and running water in the cabins, but the lodge close by has showers, a sauna and WiFi internet access. The guest room is in the main lodge on the upper level. This is the perfect room for a couple with a large bed and a view of the river. This room is ideal for people who want to enjoy a Yukon lifestyle but with modern comforts. This room has a double bed with bathroom. This is an eco-friendly ranch with solar power, well water, organic greenhouse and a recycling/composting program.
Meal Information: The ranch offers healthy, hearty home cooking, with organic vegetables, some wild game and local fish. They can provide vegetarian meals as well as accommodate dietary requirements.
Guide Information: All tours include a well-trained, certified guide and a team of 4 to 6 friendly huskies. The guides are all experienced in backcountry winter survival, first aid and dog handling. The senior guides have many years of wilderness experience including mushing and guiding. They have Food Safe and Wilderness First Aid certification. The kennels has a Wilderness Tourism License and all appropriate insurance.
Weather Information: Average temperatures at this time of winter are between -2° and - 24° Celsius / 28 to -31 degrees Fahrenheit, but extremes may be as low as -45° Celsius / -50 Fahrenheit.
Comments: Under typical conditions, each guest drives a 6- to 8-dog team, while the guides drive 8-10 dogs or ride on a snowmobile (for safety and security). All our week-long trips feature one person per sled unless otherwise requested/specified. As our dogs are exceptionally strong, we try to determine the ideal size team for each individual client. Clients are able, if they want, to try driving a larger team. As we have an emphasis on learning adventures, we want people to be able to try new things and test their own limits, if they want to.
