Greenland and South Baffin Island Explorer cruise

Explore the rugged coast of Greenland and Baffin Island, Nunavut on this arctic cruise adventure. Beginning in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland you set sail south along the coast, past pretty coulourful houses that dot the Greenlandic coast, visiting the towns of Kangamiut and Nuuk. Then you head out to sea, crossing the Davis Strait to Baffin Island. The east side of Baffin Island is one of the world’s great coastlines. The remnants the Laurentide Icesheet is the backdrop for this rugged mountainous spine that runs from the Cumberland Peninsula up to Bylot Island and beyond to Devon and Ellesmere. Deep fjords cut into the main Baffin range where you will find glaciers spilling down to the sea.

Ports of call will include Monumental Island and the towns of Pangnirtung, Kimmirut and Cape Dorset. The hamlet of Kimmirut prides itself on its warm, friendly people and traditional indigenous Inuit culture and way of life. Kimmirut, which means “a heel” in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit, is named after a geological feature resembling a heel located across the Inlet opposite the community. Cape Dorset is known as the Capital of Inuit Art and it is an excellent place to meet some of the local artists and take home a piece of their work. This area is also known for it's arctic wildlife and it is not uncommon to see walrus, whales, caribou, muskox and even a polar bear. The tour ends in the capital of Nunavut, the city of Iqaluit.

Built in 1992 in Denmark, Ocean Nova was commissioned as one of three “sister ships” to navigate Greenland’s icy waters as a coastal passenger ferry connecting the isolated villages of West Greenland. The ship’s Danish captain and bridge crew have extensive experience in navigating polar waters, and the Greenlandic hotel and dining room staff are first-rate. She is a very quiet ship, with bow and stern thrusters providing excellent maneuverability, and a shallow draught that allows anchorage closer to landing sites than ships with a deeper hull. The ship, positioned closer to shore, facilitates shorter transfer times during landings. Ocean Nova is fitted with sophisticated navigation and communication equipment, and telephone and email access is available to passengers. All cabins have private facilities and outside views.
