ABOUT THIS REGION  DOGSLEDDING

Arctic dogsledding expedition on Baffin Island

Take a step back in time and travel the traditional hunting routes of the Inuit via dog sled. The romantic image of a by-gone Arctic time – an Inuit hunter, his dog team and the wide expanse of the landscape still exists in the Arctic to this day. As much as the snowmobile – also known as the ‘iron dog’ has replaced the dog team as the primary workhorse of the Arctic, traditional dog teams still play an important part of the Inuit life and culture. This is your opportunity to experience the Arctic as it has been for centuries. Highlights of this tour include a journey over sea ice, past icebergs, towering cliffs and sweeping glaciers, experiencing the culture and untamed beauty of the Arctic by means of traditional dog sledding and mushing a team of powerful huskies as you explore the spectacular fiords north of the Arctic Circle under the tutelage of your Inuit guide.

Arctic dogsledding expedition on Baffin Island

Your chosen route of travel over the 5 days is dependent on weather, snow and sea ice conditions, and your itinerary may require modification at the Inuit guide’s discretion. In addition to cross-country travel, likely to an inland lake, the itinerary normally includes travel along steep walled fiords. Along the way you will photograph the magnificent ice and snow-locked landscape, including the region’s towering cliffs which rise sharply from the sea, and numerous glaciers spilling down the mountain valleys. Pass by traditional Inuit inukshuk that have been silently guiding the Inuit along traditional hunting and traveling routes. Witness Arctic wildlife first-hand, including polar bear, seal, ptarmigan, and in late spring, the flurry of Arctic birds that fly north along the floe edge to nest. You may also visit the edge of the floe ice where the open sea and/or pack ice begin, and where the Inuit camp and hunt in the spring.
