Submersible expedition dive to view the Titanic
Explore the Titanic a century after its sinking on this commemoratory centenary diving expedition. The year 2012 is the 100th anniversary year of the sinking of one of the most famous ships in history and these 2012 diving programs offer a rare opportunity to explore the world’s most famous shipwreck in person. Who has not heard of the Titanic, the disaster at sea by which all other disasters have since been measured? The Titanic story is infamous and the mystique surrounding her has dimished little over time. For the first time ever, you will have a chance to journey via submersible to the resting place of Titanic, 12,460 feet beneath the sea. Your adventure begins in St. John's, Newfoundland, where you will board a research vessel, your home for the next few days. En route to the dive site, you will traverse the nutrient-rich waters of Grand Banks, known for its plentiful sea life. Upon arrival at your destination point above the Titanic wreck, you will immerse yourself in the history and spirit of the adventure. On dive day you will descend nearly 2.5 miles to come face to face with the grave site of the RMS Titanic. You will be among the first non-scientists to view the most famous shipwreck in the world and experience one of the most poignant chapters in humanity's collective history.

You will journey to the Titanic aboard the MIR I and II submersibles, deep-dive vessels capable of reaching ocean depths of 20,000 feet. Housed aboard the mothership, the two MIR submersibles are part of a group of only five deep-diving vessels available to the world's scientific community. They are specifically designed to withstand the enormous pressures that exist in the depths of the ocean. Each MIR's habitat compartment is 7 feet in diameter, accommodating three persons. Air pressure inside the habitat remains at a constant one atmosphere and during the dive the temperature will drop to around 54 F (12C).
