Of the two rivers, the Coulonge is the gentlest and ranks well for novice or intermediate paddlers. Geographically, it's a very diverse river with a number of exciting chutes and waterfalls, laid out in a valley through the beautiful Laurentian woods. The river's meandering is chopped into 69 runs, 70% of them Class II's, the longest being a seven mile stretch. But you better like getting in and out of canoes because there are 19 portages on the menu, although most of them thankfully short jogs around waterfalls -- the river drops a whopping 850 feet over its length.
